IPL 2019 Playoff Scenarios: KKR, SRH and KXIP in three-way battle for last spot - Sports News

Kolkata Knight Riders need to win their last match to qualify for the playoffs ( Courtesy by BCCI ) HIGHLIGHTS Kolkata Knight Riders need to beat Mumbai Indians to progress to the playoffs Sunrisers Hyderabad can become the first team to qualify for playoffs with just 12 points SRH, KKR and KXIP could end up with a three-way tie on 12 points on Sunday After 54 matches, the final berth for the 2019 Indian Premier League playoffs is still up for grabs and 3 teams are in the race to join Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians in the quaifiers.

Royal Challangers Bangalore secured a consolation win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru on Saturday, much to the delight of Kolkata Knight Riders fans. Notably, RCB's win has also kept Kings XI Punjab's mathematical chances alive.

Match 56: Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai from 8 pm IST

The odds were stacked in favour of Sunrisers Hyderabad before their final league match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. SRH had 12 points from 13 matches and a positive net run rate of +0.653, the best in the eight-team table.

When Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers were dismissed cheaply in Bangalore's chase of 176, it seemed like Hyderabad were favourites to seal a playoffs berth.

However, Shimron Hetmyer , playing for RCB for the first time in 33 days, stepped up and showed why he is rated one of the most promising young cricketers going around. Hetmyer smashed his maiden IPL fifty and stitched a 100-plus stand for the fourth wicket with Gurkeerat Singh who also got to half-century.

Here's how the race for the final playoffs spot looks like on the last day of league matches in the 2019 IPL:

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

Simple equation: Beat Mumbai Indians on Sunday in the final league match of IPL 2019 and seal the playoffs berth. However, it's not going to be an easy task for Kolkata Knight Riders as Mumbai Indians will be keen on clinching two points to secure a top- finish and make it to Qualifier 1.

IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) May 4, 2019 The 4-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday has not hurt Sunrisers Hyderabad's Net Run Rate a lot. They have ended up with 12 points from 14 matches with an NRR of +0.577.

SRH will now have to rely on other results to know their fate. They can become the first team to qualify for playoffs with just 12 points in the IPL history provided both KXIP and KKR lose.

If Kolkata Knight Riders, who are on 12 points from 13 matches with a Net Run Rate of +0.173, beat Mumbai Indians, they will knock Sunrisers Hyderabad out.

However, if Kolkata Knight Riders lose at the Wankhede Stadium, see Sunrisers Hyderabad will most likely seal the berth on the basis of a better net run rate.

KINGS XI PUNJAB

Now, this is a bit more complex. KXIP can progress only if there's a three-way tie on 12 points. They need to beat Chennai Super Kings by a huge margin to even keep their mathematical chances alive. It's unlikely, considering CSK will be hoping to clinch two points and seal the top spot and play the Qualifier 1 at home at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Kings XI Punjab, who have 10 points from 13 games and a poor Net Run Rate of -0.351, need a massive win over CSK at home in Sunday's first match.

If KKR then lose the second match of Sunday's double header, there will be a three-way tie on 12 points.

Bottomline: A Gayle double ton and a miraculous boost to their Net Run Rate.
