A major British factory that supplies meat to KFC and M&S has been forced to shut down for two weeks after 58 members of staff tested positive for coronavirus .

The 2 Sisters Food Group confirmed that dozens of employees were struck down with the deadly virus at their site in Llangefni, Anglesey, north Wales, which processes chicken for high street supermarkets.

Earlier today it was reported that one member of the Two Sisters site is in being treated in hospital

The company said it was no doing "the right thing" by ceasing operations for a fortnight.

In a statement, it said: "The health, safety and well-being of our colleagues is ultimately the thing that matters most at our business. We are a responsible company with people at its core. Without our people we are nothing.

"Therefore in light of the current Covid-19 cases at our Llangefni site, we have decided to take the necessary action to clearly demonstrate how seriously we take this issue by doing the right thing.

"Doing the right thing means from today we will temporarily suspend production at our Llangefni site with immediate effect for a period of 14 days.

"We will not tolerate any unnecessary risks - however small - for our existing loyal workforce at the facility. The 2 Sisters site in Angelsey, North Wales. "We have worked in close collaboration in the past week with Public Health Wales, Anglesey Council, the Health & Safety Executive, the FSA (Food Standards Agency) and the Unite union who have all offered great advice, scientific knowledge and support, and we thank them for their help and guidance which has informed this decision.

"Our sole focus now is to ensure we support all our colleagues through this time and look forward to operating safely and securely in 14 days' time."

He added: "The company are taking this seriously.

"Our stewards are working with the company on site to put protective measures in place.

"But there's no doubt that people are very frightened.

"They're concerned about bringing the virus home to vulnerable members of their families, and they're concerned about creating a spike in cases on the island."

The 2 Sisters Food Group is one of the largest food producers in the UK, with sites across the country and brands including Fox's Biscuits and Holland's Pies.

It also produces about a third of all the poultry products consumed each day in the UK and has more than 7,000 workers in its specialist factories. Coronavirus outbreak
