NBA books two December regular-season games in Mexico

Two NBA regular-season games will be played in Mexico City next December, the league announced Friday, with the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons set to compete.

The Mavericks and Pistons will meet on December 12 at Mexico City Arena with the Spurs facing the Suns two nights later.

“We had a transcendent experience hosting two regular-season games in Mexico City in 2017 and our entire organization is excited about returning to Mexico as a home team next season,” Suns president Jason Rowley said.

The games will be the 29th and 30th NBA contests in Mexico since 1992, the most NBA matchups played in any nation outside the United States and Canada.

It also marks a fourth consecutive season in which two regular-season NBA games will be staged in Mexico City.

“NBA games in Mexico City are a core part of our efforts to reach and engage basketball fans throughout Mexico and Latin America,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

“With a record four NBA teams visiting Mexico City next season, we expect an unprecedented level of interest and excitement around these games and our surrounding community events.”

NBA players set to visit Mexico for the matchups include San Antonio stars LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan, Detroit’s Blake Griffin and 2018-19 rookie star Luka Doncic of Dallas. ( Agence France-Presse )
