Robinho has opened up on his ill-fated time at Manchester City , and the club's failed attempt to sign Barcelona megastar Lionel Messi . City changed as a club forever in 2008 after they were bought by the Abu Dhabi Investment Group.

And one of the club's first acts under the new ownership was to fork out £32million for Real Madrid ace Robinho.

The attacker was an instant success in Manchester, as his flair and goalscoring ability made him a star in the league.

He found the net 14 times in 31 Premier League games during his first season at the club, before leaving midway through his second season.

Now, he has revealed that he actually spoke with the club's new owner about other big-name players joining him.

City were on the verge of signing Kaka, before the Brazilian had a change of heart, and apparently went after Messi too.

"I spoke a couple of times with the owner, Sheik Mansour," he told Spanish outlet Marca .

"He said he was going to do a great job signing Kaka and Messi.
