Nick Castellanos dealt to Chicago Cubs just before MLB trade deadline

Right fielder Nicholas Castellanos is leaving the Detroit Tigers, after all. Castellanos was traded to the Chicago Cubs at the trade-deadline buzzer on Wednesday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The source could not speak publicly on the matter because the deal had yet to be finalized. It wasn't immediately clear who the Tigers received in return. Castellanos was scheduled to bat second at designated hitter in Wednesday afternoon's game against the L.A. Angels, but he was scratched and replaced by Jordy Mercer minutes before the game began. He was later shown on the Fox Sports Detroit telecast out of uniform and hugging players in the Tigers dugout. Castellano, a free agent after this season, was the Tigers' most obvious trade candidate, even dating back to last season. However, interest in Castellanos had seemed to cool as the trade deadline approached. Castellanos provides a power bat but below-average defense for the Cubs. The Tigers made two moves in the final hour before the trade deadline, including shipping closer Shane Greene to the Atlanta Braves .
