A teenager is dead and another man is fighting for life after the car they were travelling in lost control and crashed in the state's central west.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, 25km north of Gilgandra just after 6.30am, police say.

The 18-year-old man who was driving the car died at the scene.

The teen's five male passengers were taken to hospitals in Gilgandra and Dubbo, with one man left in a critical condition.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
