CONNECT TWEET LINKEDIN COMMENT EMAIL MORE AMES, Ia. — Steve Prohm was more into what Mike Jacobson could do rebounding-wise for a rebound-starved Iowa State basketball team, than what the former Waukee High School star could do on the offensive end.

The Cyclones had plenty of scorers, back when Jacobson was looking to transfer from Nebraska, but rebounders?

Not so much, so Prohm offered, and the 6-foot-9 former Cornhusker accepted.

And now, after three Maui Invitational games in which Jacobson scored 16 points against Arizona , 23 against Illinois and 19 against San Diego State , another thing has become clear.

The rebounder can score, too.

Every game since coming home to finish his college basketball career, the junior surpassed the most he ever scored at Nebraska — 14 against Rutgers in the 2016 Big Ten tournament.

Jacobson scored in double-digits in just 14 of the 65 games he played at Nebraska. He can be 8-for-8 as a Cyclone during Monday’s 7 p.m. game against Omaha at Hilton Coliseum.

Neither did anyone else, considering he averaged just 4.6 shots a game while being strait-jacketed in Lincoln. He’s averaging almost 10 shots a game now — ranging from his sweet baby hook to 3-point range.

“I’m taking advantage of my opportunities when they’re there,” Jacobson said. “I shoot open shots — trying not to force anything. (Prohm) has put a lot of confidence in me. He gives me the freedom to make plays.”

He’ll start again on Monday night. By the Dec. 3 home game against North Dakota, 6-foot-9 Cameron Lard’s suspension will be over.

What happens after that?

A season ago, Lard was one of the Big 12 Conference's best bigs. He could be one of the best in the post this season, too, once he's in playing shape.

And what happens to Jacobson when 6-foot-8 Solomon Young returns after having groin surgery? You don’t just shove a guy like Jacobson to the end of the bench. You take advantage of this guy's 40 percent 3-point shooting and his high basketball IQ, that’s what you do.

Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, that Lard, who enrolled at a wellness center in early June instead of joining his teammates for summer workouts, rejoined the Cyclones earlier this month. Lard, who will be a sophomore next season, had a drug paraphernalia charge dismissed during a pretrial hearing in April. The 20-year-old Lard was also cited for being underage at an Ames bar this offseason. Those issues pushed Lard to spend time at a wellness center in an effort to make better decisions and improve as a person, according to Prohm. It’s a lineup option that could look like this until Lindell Wigginton recovers from his strained left foot and until Young is back:

Nick Weiler-Babb, Talen Horton-Tucker, Marial Shayok, Jacobson and Lard.

It’s not happening Monday night against Omaha, but a week later against North Dakota State?

“We’ll have a week to sit down with my staff at that point,” Prohm said in Maui. “I've kind of got in the back of my mind things that we may need if we're big at times — things we need to put in if Lard and Jacobson are in the game at the same time.

“Everybody's got to buy into their role and max out their job, but obviously it's in the back of my mind.

“We have good relations with our kids. I think they trust us, so we’ve got to continue to invest in them, and then we'll have that week off to try to instill some other (lineups).”

Bottom line: Iowa State can play multiple lineups again.
