Big 12 power rankings: Oklahoma looks elite as Baylor, Iowa State emerge

Week 7 of the college football season gave us what we were waiting for. Oklahoma showed it is the strength of the Big 12 Conference. Texas didn’t do anything to warrant thinking the Longhorns are anything other than a strong No. 2, and yes, Baylor is for real — although the officials may have had something to do with the Bears’ latest escape by three points over Texas Tech.

Throw in Iowa State, which after almost two months finally looks to have found a bonafide rushing threat not named Brock Purdy, and you’ve got a clear picture of the conference’s top four teams.

No. 1 Oklahoma (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) Last week’s ranking: 1

Last weekend: Defeated No. 11 Texas 34-27.

In a nutshell: Breaking News — Oklahoma is playing solid defense, too. Allowing just 27 points in what’s usually a high-scoring Red River Showdown shows that finally, the Sooners can play a bit on that side of the ball. They had to, because quarterback Jalen Hurts wasn’t perfect – with a fumble and a red-zone interception. He’s still in serious Heisman Trophy contention.

On deck: Saturday vs. West Virginia at noon, Fox.
