Snapshot Of Tied World Cup Final

Lord's Picture: Racing and Sports

WORLD CUP FINAL: ENGLAND v NEW ZEALAND

Score: England (241 from 50 overs, 0-15 from super over, 26 boundaries) defeat New Zealand (8-241 from 50 overs, 1-15 from super over, 17 boundaries)

Man of the moment: Ben Stokes. The villain of England's final-over capitulation in the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup final redeemed himself in emphatic fashion, scoring 84 not out then an additional eight runs in the super over.

Key moment: Stokes' "six" off the third last ball of England's regular innings. The allrounder dived while scurrying back for a second run, the ball deflected off his bat and rocketed to the rope.

Stat of the day: It was the closest finish to a World Cup final by some margin. The previous mark was Australia's seven-run win over England in the Kolkata decider of 1987.

Summary: In possibly the greatest ODI ever, NZ's total looked very intimidating after the hosts collapsed to 4-86. Stokes steadied and the final 10 overs of the chase were packed with drama. Stokes scored freely in Trent Boult's additional over before Jimmy Neesham thrashed a six and threatened to haul in a super-over target of 16. English keeper Jos Buttler's diving run out of Martin Guptill was a fitting end to a thrilling final.

Quote: of the day: "I said to Kane I'll be apologising for that for the rest of my life" - Stokes on his lucky additional four runs that proved pivotal.
