A pensioner has died after being struck by a HGV in a busy city centre today.

The 82-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene in Newport, south Wales, police said.

Gwent Police say the 45-year-old HGV driver, of Bedfordshire, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

No further information is known about the victim.

The crash happened at around 9.45am on Usk Way, a major road which runs through Newport.

The Welsh Ambulance confirmed one person involved in the crash died, Wales Online says.

A spokesman said they left the scene at around 12.22pm and took one patient to the Royal Gwent Hospital.
