Amidst a highly-competitive Test series between India and Australia, cricket fans Down Under are being treated to some entertaining cricketing action in the eighth edition of the Big Bash League.

In only the second match of the ongoing season between Melbourne Renegades and the Perth Scorchers at the Marvel Stadium in Docklands on Thursday, there was plenty of action-filled moments and one of them has become a major talking point.

In the 13th over of a low-scoring match between the two sides, Perth Scorchers batsman Ashton Turner swung at a Dan Christian's delivery and got a top-edge that ballooned up into the air.

With three fielders running in to take the catch, the ball hit the roof and dropped dead towards at deep mid-wicket region.

The incident left the commentators confused as they initially called it a dead ball. As it turned out, Scorchers were awarded six runs as per Big Bash League's new "playing conditions".

"I think it's a pretty bad rule. It saved me tonight I think it's not fair. It should be a dead ball - you can't predict whether they're going to catch it, so there's no fairer outcome than a dead ball," Turner told cricket.com.au.

"It's a little bit different if you think it might have hit the roof over the boundary rope (but) it might be hard to detect where it's actually [going to land] and if it's going to go for six."

KFC Big Bash League (@BBL) December 20, 2018 Bowler Christian looked as confused as the commentators but he got his revenge by picking up the wicket of Turner in the very next delivery.

Christian conceded the rule is a bit "annoying" and pointed out the inconsistency in such playing conditions as deliveries that hit the roaming cameras in cricket grounds - popularly known as spider cam - are declared deal balls.

"It's a little bit annoying - I suppose if you're batting, you're happy, if you're bowling, you're a little bit annoyed about it. It's an interesting rule, especially with something like the Spidercam which you have in the other international matches. If it hits that, it's a dead ball. If you hit this roof, it's a six," Christian said.

"It's just the way it goes I suppose. We were just lucky we got Turner the next ball and he didn't get too with too many more."

Initially, the Big Bash League had declared balls hitting the roof of stadiums, especially the one in Docklands as dead balls. Following a fan outrage over an Aaron Finch's big hit in 2012 that hit a retractable part of the stadium, the rules were changed, according to the report.

Scorchers eventually suffered their first-ever defeat to the Renegades as they were able to post only 103 runs on the board. Renegades clinched the historic win, chasing down the target in just 15.2 overs. Sam Harper and Mohammad Nabi hit quickfire 30s to help their side past the finish line.
