External Relations Officer of Ennahda Movement to ‘public’: Tunisia will not return to tyranny March 15, 2019 at 1:11 am | Published in: Africa , News , Tunisia Tunisia's Ennahda party flag [File photo] March 15, 2019 at 1:11 am The External Relations Officer of the Tunisian Ennahda Movement, Rafiq Abdul Salam, has said that that violation and negligence are behind the incident of the death of 11 babies in the Hospital Rabta on 7 and 8 March. The Ennahda movement has also called for the formation of a special committee to investigate the incident, according to Salam.
He called on the Assembly of the Representatives of the People to give attention to the issue and to supervise the investigation.
However, with regard to the demands calling for government resignation, Salam said that it is appropriate to wait for the results of the Commission of Inquiry.
Regarding the recent media statement of Bashir Al-Shabi, the lawyer defending Mustafa Khidr who is accused in the case of the so-called “secret apparatus”, he said that “Al-Shabi brought to light many facts that were unknown for Tunisians.” Mustafa Khidr was arrested in 2013 while Ennahda was in power.

In the case of the “secret apparatus” Ennahda is accused of controlling the judiciary, security and the state.
Abdul Salam rejected the claims that a “secret apparatus” existed and called for ensuring the neutrality of state institutions and keeping them away from political and electoral disputes.
He reiterated the Ennahdha movement’s demands that Prime Minister Youssef Chahed should refrain from exploiting state institutions and structures for electoral purposes because this corrupts political life and eliminates the meaning of state independence from parties.
With regard to his evaluation of the current political situation in Tunisia, Abdul Salam said that the political climate in Tunisia is confused. There are a lot of disputes, transformations of political differences into a conflict and ideological polarization and the rise of tendencies of exclusion and political insults. This does not provide a sound political climate for the conduct of the electoral process. Though there is no reason to delay the date of the elections.
Salem also explained that the movement has not yet determined its candidate, and the option would be to nominate a candidate from within the party or support a consensual national candidate.
