Gilas Pilipinas is hoping for the best-case scenario after Matthew Wright hurt his right ankle during Monday’s preparation for the FIBA World Cup at the Meralco Gym.

Wright participated in the early part of the two-hour session but eventually sat down and had his ankle checked by team physician Dexter Aseron.

Coach Yeng Guiao admitted that there’s a cause for concern after Wright was listed as day-to-day for injuring his right peroneal tendon.

“Medyo worried ako (I’m a bit worried about his injury),” Guiao said after the two-hour practice session.

Wright is set to undergo test to determine not only the severity of the injury but his availability for the two tune-up matches against National Basketball League Australia side Adelaide 36ers on Friday and Sunday.

The national cagers are also dealing with injuries, namely Marcio Lassiter who sprained his left MCL while playing for San Miguel Beer in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals.

Gabe Norwood missed all of Gilas’ tune-up matches against Congo and Ivory Coast due to a strained groin while Poy Erram rolled his left ankle during the same Monday practice.

But Norwood has been taking part of Gilas scrimmages since returning home while Aseron said that Erram only sustained a regular sprain.

Wright is considered as an important figure in Gilas’ upcoming World Cup campaign in Foshan, China with his outside shooting, especially with Lassiter likely to miss the global cage competition.
