UAAP: Bulldogs shred UP Maroons; Ateneo prevails

Defending champion National University (NU) stretched its winning run to five games after it toppled University of the Philippines (UP), 25-19, 25-17, 25-15, yesterday in UAAP men’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.

Hard-hitting Bryan Bagunas fired 17 points including 14 attacks as the Bulldogs hiked their win-loss tally to 5-1 behind pacesetters Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws (6-0).

Francis Saura contributed 12 points while Angelo Almendras added 11 points for NU, which overpowered struggling UP with 44 kills.

Joshua Retamar also stepped up with 24 excellent sets for the Bulldogs, who pushed the Maroons to their sixth consecutive defeat despite the combined 23-point effort of John Millete and Jerry San Pedro.

Also extending their winning run was Ateneo, which bested Adamson, 25-18, 25-22, 25-21, for its third straight victory.

Tony Koyfman sizzled for the Blue Eagles by pumping in all his 14 points on attacks while Ron Medalla and Gian Glorioso chipped in 11 and 10 points.

Ateneo improved to 4-2 for solo third behind FEU and NU while Adamson absorbed its third straight loss against three triumphs to tie with UST in the middle standings.
