Cameronian center Donald Tankoua led San Beda with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Calvin Oftana, the leading MVP contender, had 17 points with nine boards. Fil-Canadian James Canlas-Kwekuteye contributed 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The win kept San Beda’s perfect streak going and put the Red Lions on track for a twice-to-beat bonus in the semifinal stage.

“Our goal is to improve every game. Yes panalo, pero alam namin hindi masyado masaya si coach Boyet (Fernandez) sa performance namin. Kaya we need to work extra hard sa ensayo and sa next game,” said Oftana.

Perpetual Help, which got 13 points from Kim Aurin, dropped to 3-9.

In the second game, Mapua beat Jose Rizal University, 72-67, for its sixth win in seven matches.

Justin Serrano and JP Nieles stepped up for Mapua, which missed the services of Noah Lugo (fever) and Paolo Hernandez (injury).

Serrano scored eight of his 12 points in the Cardinals’ third quarter breakaway while Nieles, playing extended minutes with Lugo out, added 11 points.

Mapua moved up to solo fifth in the standings with a 7-6 card, half game ahead of College of St. Benilde (6-6), and half game behind fourth-running San Sebastian (7-5) for the last Final Four berth.

Marwin Dionisio finished with 15 points while Agem Miranda added 13 for JRU, which fell to 4-8.
