Andreas Bouchalakis is poised to return to the Nottingham Forest lineup against Cardiff City.
Nottingham Forest have a hole to fill in midfield against Cardiff City this weekend with Liam Bridcutt serving a suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season.
Bridcutt has played every minute of Forest’s Championship campaign since joining from Leeds United in the summer, playing a key anchoring role in an expansive Tricky Trees lineup.
The 28-year-old will be a big miss against the second-place Bluebirds, but his absence presents an opportunity for Andreas Bouchalakis to try to force his way back into the starting XI.
The Greek midfielder began the season in Mark Warburton’s team, making an immediate impression by scoring two stunning goals in a 4-3 win over Brentford on his league debut.
But he has only started two games since Bridcutt’s arrival, with Warburton preferring to partner the Englishman with Ben Osborn in the midfield and surrounding them with attacking talent.
However, this balance has not worked away from the City Ground as Forest have lost six times on the road this season with the third worst away defensive record in the Championship.
Should Bouchalakis put in a good performance against Cardiff, he might make Warburton think about keeping him in the side when Bridcutt returns, with Osborn shifting to the left wing.
Forest are approaching a run of three away games in four and the extra protection that Bouchalakis would offer in midfield should make them tougher to score against on the road.
