transfer news: Roman Abramovich interested again and backed to make more signings

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is once again "interested" in making big investments into the Blues squad, reckons former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp. Chelsea have generally been outspent in recent years by the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United . But Frank Lampard has already seen attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech and striker Timo Werner brought into his squad ahead of the start of next season.

Bayer Leverkusen and Germany sensation Kai Havertz is also expected to join the Blues to take the summer spending to over £150million.

But Redknapp believes that will not be the end of the incomings for this window.

The Sky Sports pundit has praised Lampard's side for qualifying for the Champions League in his first campaign at the club.

But Redknapp says the defence must be addressed in the transfer market, as well as the situation in goal.

"There's no doubt at all he'll be speaking to the owners and I do get the feeling the owner's interested at the moment.

"The fact they've signed Werner, the fact they've signed Ziyech, they're talking about Havertz as well who is a really talented player from Germany, Declan Rice has had a mention as well in the papers.

"So there are a lot of players that Chelsea are getting aligned to.

"If Frank gets those players in, I still think defensively he will look at that and think we conceded too many goals this year.

"Finding a good goalkeeper is not going to be easy, he made a big decision leaving [Arrizabalaga] out and bringing in Caballero who was excellent.

"Frank's under no illusions, they need to buy players to get to that next level.

"Man City and Liverpool are still on a different level and that's why they are so far ahead.

"But slowly they've got to bridge that gap, bring in better players, they've got the right manager in place."

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs agrees improvements in defence is required for Lampard.

Giggs told Premier League Productions: "If they are going to challenge for the Premier League they do need to get better defensively and [concede] less goals because every team that wins the Premier League has a decent defence.

"You can't go throughout a season thinking you can score more goals than the other [team]."
