transfer news: Borussia Dortmund could keep Jadon Sancho for a year before selling

Manchester United transfer target Jadon Sancho could stay at Borussia Dortmund for a year, but the Bundesliga giants have been warned that they could get caught in the same trap as Manchester City found themselves in with Leroy Sane. Sancho has two years remaining on his Dortmund contract, but transfer expert Duncan Castles believes there's a chance Dortmund will extend his deal with a release clause on it for United to trigger next year.

The English winger is believed to be one of the club's top targets ahead of the upcoming window, and reportedly agreed personal terms with the Red Devils.

United reportedly decided they'll only pay £50million for any of their targets this summer, significantly less than the £116m demanded by Dortmund.

Sancho himself is said to be keen on the move, but the Red Devils will wait until the window opens to see if they'll fork out for him.

And Castles believes there's a chance Dortmund will make a move to stop this from happening and sign him to a new deal in order to up his value.

Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast , he explained that the Bundesliga giants might offer him a new deal with a release clause active next summer, allowing them to receive the full amount they want for him when the market is back to normal.

Castles likened the situation to City and Sane, as the German winger has reportedly agreed to sign for Bayern Munich in a £50m deal, significantly less than his valuation.

"We've seen this week United briefing that they won't go above the £50million as a transfer fee for Jadon Sancho, which is roughly half of what Dortmund have been indicating as their asking price for the player.

"Therefore, if you're Manchester United and you have an interest in both players, you can see why they'd be waiting and seeing what the market does. They're seeing what both players get priced at.

"Dortmund have the situation with Sancho where he only has two years left on his contract. If they let that run for another year, there's no way they'll get another £100million for the player in a year.

They were forced to sell at below what the market value would be if he was on a longer-term contract.

"Dortmund have the issue of replacing Sancho, something they've been preparing for for a long time.

"We know their strategy has been buying younger players, we know they have no hesitation to buy players from England, they pioneered that process of taking players out of that Premier League academy system and developing them in Germany, increasing their value and selling them on at a later stage."

"Grealish [a potential replacement for Sancho at Dortmund] would be a different story in that he's more developed in his career, but then, if Aston Villa are relegated you'll think they can secure him for a cheaper price, put him in the Dortmund team and play him in the Champions League, compete for the Bundesliga and get good seasons from him before getting money down the line."
