Tottenham have been told to forget all about making a bid for Atletico Madrid outcast Thomas Lemar - unless they can get him for the right price. Atleti are reportedly ready to let the French winger leave in January. Related articles

Lemar has failed to show any sort of return since joining Atletico Madrid from Monaco last summer.

The France international signed in a £60million deal last summer, but has been unsuccessful ever since.

In that time, he has scored just two league goals and provided three assists in 46 games.

And as a result, Atleti are believed to be moving on from him and will allow him to leave if the right price is paid.

Tottenham and Arsenal were both previously believed to be interested in the 24-year-old, and could make a move in January.

However, former Liverpool star Steve Nicol believes Lemar needs to be avoided at all costs, because he hasn’t shown he is worth the hefty price.

“What this guy has shown at Atleti, you wouldn’t buy him in a heartbeat,” he said on ESPN FC .

During the week, Atletico boss Diego Simeone seemed to open the door to him leaving by admitting he hasn’t been up to the grade since joining.

“Lemar is an important player who hasn't been able to develop his game but who has characteristics that others don't have,” he said. “If Lemar can stay or not... we know that agents work in an exemplary way.

“Clubs work in terms of the needs of the clubs. But, as a footballer, every time he has been available, he's played a lot more than he hasn't played.

“His characteristics have always excited me. But he hasn't been able to live up to expectations.

“Let's hope he has a good moment when he comes back from injury.” Related articles
