nearly signed two Premier League players before Andy Robertson transfer

Liverpool explored two other alternatives before signing Andy Robertson from Hull City nearly three years ago. The Scotland captain has made a huge impact since arriving at Anfield, despite a prolonged settling in period under Jurgen Klopp.

Ever since that moment, Robertson has not looked back and has made the spot his own.

Moreno has since moved on to Villarreal, while the versatile James Milner rarely has to fill in for Robertson thanks to his incredible fitness levels.

Robertson cost the Reds just £8million and the deal is now recognised as one of the finest bargains of recent times.

Liverpool had two other targets before signing Andy Robertson (Image: GETTY) According to The Telegraph , there were two players the Reds were closely tracking before they opted for the 26-year-old.

One was Leicester City's Ben Chilwell, who Liverpool had been following since 2016.

The England international spent time on loan at Huddersfield Town and really impressed David Wagner.

So much so that Klopp admitted earlier this season that Wagner was on his case to snap the left-back up.

Another full-back on the agenda was Emerson Palmieri, who was impressing with Roma.

There was a suggestion that he could follow Mohamed Salah to Anfield from the Stadio Olimpico, before Chelsea snapped him up.

Now there will be no regrets about how things have panned out.

Liverpool looked at both Ben Chilwell and Emerson before signing Andy Robertson (Image: GETTY) Liverpool's director Ian Graham - the man who identified and recommended the signing of Robertson - claims he had all the attributes to be one of the very best.

"It’s the sort of awkward or ungainly looking players who have sort of been overlooked," Graham told Freakonomics Radio, when discussing his role.

"One of my favourite players is Andy Robertson, our left-back, one of the best left-backs in Europe and now European champion, of course.

"Andy’s problem was his background as much as anything. He only started playing Premier League football at around the age of 22. He played for Hull City, which is not a very good football team.

"They got relegated from the Premier League and Andy was the best young full-back in Britain, at the time.

"He was in the strange situation of being a really great attacking full-back playing in a really poor defensive team."
