Last weekend's win at Leicester not only confirmed Champions League football would return to Old Trafford next season, but it was a vital victory which further emphasised the growing belief in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a coach.

The Norwegian has often cited fine margins since he arrived at United in a managerial capacity and he knows only too well that defeat at the King Power Stadium would have prompted a number of cries for him to be sacked.

It is testament to both Solskjaer and the board that they showed patience despite such early season struggles and now United are ready to reap the reward as they enter the summer transfer window in better shape than most.

We're only three days into the window opening but the list of names linked with a move to Manchester is already spiralling out of control. United's return to the Champions League has fuelled fan dreams of star signings in the next few weeks, and while that might be the case, Solskjaer has already hinted at another steady summer of progress in charge.

"It won’t be six or seven coming in definitely. It will be a similar window," Solskjaer said of United's summer plans on January deadline day, having seen the club sign three players last summer and two in the winter. "But here we go again, January is not even done but we are talking about the summer window. Hopefully we can do our business early on."

United's wishes of completing early business might have been boosted by their return to the Champions League but they are under no illusion about the fact concluding deals has been made more difficult by the wider financial landscape.

Although many sides might be forced to sell their best players in order to keep revenue flowing over the next few months they will also need to strike the balance to ensure they stay competitive next season, and as such they will be holding out for the biggest fees possible.

Irrespective of the unique transfer window we have entered, United always knew a deal for top target Jadon Sancho would take a huge chunk out of their budget, and the club has still never had a net spend greater than £150million during a single summer window.

Even last summer United only completed three deals and fans dreaming of anything more than that this year will likely have to rein in their expectations.

A deal for someone like Sancho has the capabilities to revolutionise the club, but Solskjaer is also aware of the need to bolster the overall strength of his squad with more bargain buys in a similar mould to Daniel James last summer being considered.

Breaking the club transfer record for Sancho could prove to be the catalyst behind United's next Premier League title triumph, but supporters must accept it isn't a transformation which will simply happen overnight.
