According to Spanish publication Marca , Atletico Madrid want to bring the Uruguayan striker to La Liga this month.

However, PSG don’t want to lose Cavani mid-way through the season and especially to a club who they see as a Champions League rival.

Following a rule change by UEFA, players who switch clubs during the course of a season will be allowed to play for both teams the Champions League.

The rule change came into force in 2018 and with both PSG and Atletico having reached the knockout stages of the competition, the French club are reluctant to allow Cavani to leave for Spain halfway through the season.

The 32-year-old is in the final six months of his deal with PSG and by not allowing him to leave in January they risk the chance of him leaving for nothing in the summer.

Former Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi may have replaced Cavani in PSG’s starting line-up, but with a long way left to go in the season, the club think they will benefit more from keeping the Uruguayan in their squad.

During his time with PSG, Cavani has scored 198 goals in 291 appearances in all competitions.
