Rahul came back into the side in place of Rohit Sharma, who returned home to be with his wife and newborn daughter. Rahul was dropped in favour of Hanuma Vihari, went back down the order.

As Rahul and Mayank Agarwal opened the innings for India , it ws the first time in the history of Indian cricket that two Karnataka batsmen walked out to start the innings.

Virat Kohli at the toss said that it would be good pitch to bat on, as decided to bat first after winning the toss.

"It will be tougher to tougher to bat on as the game goes on, so its ideal for us to bat," Kohli said.

Rahul looked uneasy at the crease and after just nine balls, walked back to the pavilion, as Josh Hazlewood dismissed him for the fourth time in his Test career - the joint most along with Stuart Broad and Nathan Lyon.

In his six-ball stay at the crease, Rahul got two boundaries as he kept edging the balls.

This is how he was dismissed - J. Hazlewood to L. Rahul: OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Ball number 9. Wicket number 1. Australia have struck early. Once again, an Indian opening stand has been dislodged cheaply. Rahul's tentativeness outside the off stump continues. He is not sure which balls to play and which ones to leave. His two boundaries came off edges and this one again, he is unsure. The ball lands on a good length outside off and then moves away slightly. Takes the outside edge and is stored

After Rahul's dismissal, Twitter blasted the opening batsman for his poor choice of shot and lauded him for his 'consistency'.
