China has been investing across the globe or the last 20 years (they now control many of the major ports in Europe, for example) much like the US did in the 1950s. Meanwhile, we are exercising protectionist policies that might have served us well in the 1980s but not today. We are actually falling behind China and within a decade will have an economy second to theirs.
