PS5 price and pre-order latest as new PlayStation 5 console rival is revealed | Gaming | Entertainment | Express.co.uk

The Xbox Series S could be a big rival to the PS5 (Image: SONY) More news regarding the final PS5 price is expected in the coming weeks, along with the first details on when pre-order will be available.

Sony has been slow to release new information but that hasn’t stopped the company being backed to top its rivals Microsoft.

Some analysts believe that the PS5 can beat the likes of the Xbox Series X, based on how well established the PlayStation brand is around the world.

The new report from DFC intelligence explains: “Microsoft is trying its best with Xbox Series X, but the past few months have revealed they are just too far behind Sony.

“Consumer brand preference is strongly towards PlayStation. As a piece of hardware there is nothing Xbox Series X is doing to change that perception.

“Sony is also a global powerhouse in video games. Microsoft is only strong in English speaking markets.

“The Xbox has no presence in Japan and is weak in most of Europe. Sony’s strength in global consumer electronics distribution has been too much for Microsoft to overcome, even after 20 years of concerted effort.”

So with reports like that backing Sony, what can Microsoft do to try and even the next-gen odds?

Those who have been following the slow crawl toward the next-gen release cycle may have heard of something called Project Lockhart.

Rumours of a less powerful Xbox console launching the same year as the Xbox Series X have been around for some time.

And Microsoft have spoken about launching only one console and focusing entirely on that project.

But a new report out this week suggests that an Xbox Series X - AKA Project Lockhart - could be real and in production.

A white Xbox Series S controller has been found listed on a resale site, and The Verge reports that it is a genuine Microsoft product.

This would line up with earlier reports that Microsoft is planning to announce some major news during August 2020.

The Xbox Series S could be a big part of that new reveal and could provide the company with a way to undercut the PS5 price.

So even if the PS5 - or digital-only version - costs less than the Xbox Series X, it seems unlikely it will be able to beat the Xbox Series S.

The downside is that the Series S will offer a lot less power, including 7.5GB of RAM, and around 4 teraflops of GPU performance, paired with the same CPU as the Xbox Series X.

Here are some of the stats Microsoft has revealed so far about the Xbox Series X, telling fans in 2020:

“Xbox Series X, the most powerful gaming console, empowers developers to deliver on their creative visions and dreams.

“It packs an unprecedented 12 teraflops of GPU power and enables new technologies and features like hardware-accelerated Direct X raytracing, variable rate shading, framerates up to 120 fps, and Quick Resume for multiple games, all of which cumulatively will deliver a new level of fidelity, immediacy, precision and accuracy never before seen in console gaming.

Trending “Powered by our next generation, custom-designed processor including an 8 core Zen 2 CPU, delivering more than 4x the processing power of an Xbox One, and a 12 TFLOP RDNA 2 GPU, more than 8x the performance of the original Xbox One, Xbox Series X will enable a new level of visual fidelity and immersion.

“Pair that with the highest bandwidth GDDR6 memory of any next generation console, and a custom, next generation solid state drive (SSD), Xbox Series X will provide developers the power to push their creative visions to the limit.

“With next generation innovations including DirectX hardware-accelerated raytracing, variable refresh rate and ultra-low latency input, Xbox Series X sets the stage for a new level of fidelity, precision and accuracy never before seen in console gaming.”

And if we’re finally finding out about Microsoft’s latest next-gen console, could that mean a price reveal from all the companies is on its way?

Regardless of what new device you’re planning to buy, it seems everyone is desperate to find out how much everything is going to cost.
