Euro-focused mid-sizer has been axed Down Under, with the brand to soldier on with just the Sonata in the medium segment moving forward.

Hyundai Australia has confirmed the ageing i40 sedan and wagon have been dropped from the local line-up, with the next-generation Sonata to be the brand's standalone mid-sized offering when it arrives later this year.

Currently, the brand offers the i40 and Sonata concurrently in the medium segment, with the i40 available in both sedan and wagon forms while the Sonata is sedan-only.

The i40 also offers diesel power, while the Sonata is available with only petrol engines – albeit one naturally-aspirated and one turbocharged powertrain.

Both models are sourced from South Korea for the Australian market, though Europe only gets the i40 and North America only gets the Sonata.

In the second half of 2019, the all-new Sonata (above) is set to arrive in local showrooms, bringing the latest driver assistance, infotainment and convenience technologies, along with a new range of 'Smartstream' petrol powertrains.

With the i40 discontinued, it's almost certain the new Sonata will replace both current offerings when it arrives later this year.

Going by the most recent VFACTS data as of 28 February 2019, Hyundai has registered just five i40s year to date, compared to 191 Sonata sedans.

The Hyundai i40 first launched Down Under in the latter half of 2011, and received a mid-life facelift in 2015.
