Western Wayne mayors, police chiefs planning tour to hear concerns

A response, in part, to nationwide demonstrations against police brutality and other concerns, several municipalities in western Wayne County are setting up monthly meetings to hear residents’ law enforcement concerns. The events — which are being called "listening tours" — will be held in different communities with top city and police officials who can answer questions, offer insight and just listen to what residents have to say. "It's not a panel, and it's not necessarily a forum," said Jordyn Sellek, the executive director of the Conference of Western Wayne. "But, they want to hear from the community: How do things affect you day to day?" The first one, she said, is expected to be in Livonia, and information and meeting dates are expected soon. The Conference of Western Wayne , one of three groups organizing the tour, coordinates 911 services for about 700,000 residents living within a 340 square-mile region. It is made up of the chief elected officials from 18 communities. The communities are: Belleville, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Garden City, Inkster, Livonia, Northville, Plymouth, Romulus, Wayne, Westland, Canton, Huron, Northville, Plymouth Township, Redford Township, Sumpter and Van Buren. The other groups organizing the listening tours are the Western Wayne police chiefs and Western Wayne County NAACP, who also seek to encourage conversation and solutions to problems.
