People's Choice Awards go on amid fires: 'People need entertainment'

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – As other red carpets were canceled because of the fires continuing to rage in California, the People's Choice Awards show went on as planned Sunday night. Beauty influencers, podcasters, TV personalities and only a few big stars walked the carpet at the smoky, tented Barker Hangar to salute fans' favorites on E!'s live telecast. (More A-listers would pop up at the show later.)

"Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon, one of the more recognizable names seen before the award show, explained why he showed up for the event, which took place less than 40 miles from where the Woolsey Fire burned and a dozen people were killed in country-music bar shooting just days prior.

"People need entertainment and that’s our jobs," Fallon told USA TODAY on the PCA red carpet. "And so we’re here to put on a show and entertain people. If I can just for one second get your mind off your problems and make you laugh a little bit, then I’m doing my job."

— Carly Mallenbaum (@ThatGirlCarly) November 12, 2018 He talked about how some of his friends living in Malibu have lost their homes because of the fires.

"It’s heartbreaking," he said. "Thankfully, they’re safe and thank God for these firefighters."

"GLOW" star Betty Gilpin, who presented an award with "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" veteran Terry Crews, called the fire "a disaster of staggering magnitude," adding, "Thanks to all the firefighters and first responders who are on the front lines."

During her acceptance speech for the People's Icon Award, Melissa McCarthy also took the time out to recognize the people affected by the flames.

"Please keep the victims, volunteers and firefighters in your hearts and any donations to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation ... will be put to good use and will make a difference," McCarthy said.

Victoria Beckham began her Fashion Icon Award acceptance speech by showing love to the first responders, saying she wanted to "add my admiration for the firefighters who are doing such an incredible job."

Danai Gurira, star of "Black Panther" and "The Walking Dead," recognized people who have lost their homes in the fire as well as the people fighting it: "The devastation that people are going through right now out there, we are with you. To the first responders, your courage your bravery what you do to serve those out there who need you, thank you for what you do."
