Jose's Tacos to open 2nd spot in Eastern Market

A popular downtown Detroit taqueria is opening a second location this summer in Eastern Market. The new Jose's Tacos will be double the size of the original restaurant that debuted five years ago at 218 East Grand River. Guanajuato, Mexico natives Jose and Leticia Orozco, plus their children Luis, Laura and Diana, are behind the business. Diners will be able to find the same classic dishes such as tacos, tortas and burritos, but also new menu items created with recipes from Leticia's family cookbook. A line of natural fruit water will also be offered. “We never thought this would happen,” Luis Orozco said in a news release about the new location. “But we buy all our produce at the market, and people have been telling us forever we should open up a new spot since there aren’t any other Mexican restaurants there. Sanford Nelson is one of our regulars, and he suggested it separately just as we were starting to think about it seriously.” The second Jose's Tacos will be on Market Street in a spot formerly occupied by The Cultivation Station. Nelson's company, Firm Real Estate, LLC, owns the building. Firm Real Estate made headlines recently for a bit of other high-profile restaurant news. Russell Street Deli chef and co-owner Ben Hall announced in April that the deli, an Eastern Market staple for three decades, will close at the end of September because of a dispute with Nelson. In the Jose Taco's news release, Nelson said: “It’s been an honor over the last six months to work with the Orozco family as they launch a second location and realize their dreams of expansion. Locally-owned small businesses are part of Eastern Market’s DNA and having Jose’s Tacos in the mix will be a great addition to the neighborhood.” Contact staff writer Ann Zaniewski at 313-222-6594 or azaniewski@freepress.com.
