Eden softball advances to Class B state semifinals

BROCKPORT — Kaitlyn Schmitz noticed the absence of intensity along the Eden softball team bench during its Class B Far West Regional against Waterloo.

So, the sophomore outfielder said a few words to her team as the Raiders prepared to bat in the sixth inning.

"The game was tied at the time and I was like, 'They're winning the game with energy, and we've got to change that,' " Schmitz said. "That sparked something, and our bats came alive."

Eden heeded Schmitz's call. The Raiders scored seven runs on eight hits in the top of the sixth to defeat Waterloo of Section V, 8-1, for the regional title.

Eden (21-3) will face Oneida of Section III in a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B semifinal at 11:30 am Saturday in South Glens Falls. The winner plays for the state title at 4 p.m.

Marissa Calloway struck out 10 for Eden, which took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Brooke Woodard’s RBI double that scored Jordan Lauer.

Jordan Colegrove’s RBI single in the bottom of the third for Waterloo drove in Morgan Kapp and tied the game at 1-1, but Lauer drove in Schmitz on a single to give Eden a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, and Katie Zimmerman followed by driving in Courtney Schmitt to give the Raiders a 3-1 advantage.

Eden scored four runs on six consecutive hits in the sixth, and after Kapp struck out Lydia for Waterloo's second out, Mattie Woodard's triple drove in two more runs, and Calloway hit a double that drove in Woodard.
