Detroit Tigers' Spencer Torkelson has excellent taste in movies

There is a lot to like about Spencer Torkelson , who the Tigers took with the first overall pick on Wednesday night in the 2020 MLB draft . He has a great bat — he has the most power of any hitter in this draft . He gets on base. He’s patient at the plate. And he hits the ball on the screws. But there’s something else. Something more revealing about Torkelson and his family. While doing an interview on MLB Network before the draft from his home in Petaluma, California, the background was fantastic. Yes, in the age of Zoom calls because of the coronavirus, we have learned how to study backgrounds. Because the backgrounds say everything. And Torkelson did an interview in front of some movie posters that say everything. One was “Caddyshack.” Yes sir — “It’s in the hole.” Another was “Jaws” OK. Very solid — “You're gonna need a bigger boat.” And the final was just as good: “Sandlot.” Simply awesome — “You're killing me, Smalls.” Those three posters tell you all you need to know how he was raised. The right way. But there was something else that came out when he was asked about why he wasn’t drafted coming out of high school. "It lit a fire inside me," Torkelson told MLB Network. "Come junior year at ASU, I’m going to be a first rounder — I told myself that. You gotta let it motivate you. You can’t let it tear you down. You can be sorry for yourself for a good 5 minutes, and then it’s back to work. If you are going to make it to the Major Leagues, you are going to make it no matter what. That’s what you gotta believe." It was revealing. What he said. And the background behind him. Contact Jeff Seidel: jseidel@freepress.com. Follow him on Twitter @seideljeff.
