Dearborn Public Schools is studying later start time for high schools

The Dearborn Public Schools district will be studying later high school start times, superintendent Glenn Maleyko announced Friday. The school district discussed this change several years ago and expanded research on the benefits of later school start times has pushed the district to consider the matter further, Maleyko wrote . “Looking at school start times is in the very early phases of discussion, and our administrative team has started collecting data and information that will help the Board of Education in developing a plan to engage the community in the months ahead,” Maleyko wrote in a statement. “All parents, students, and staff will be affected by any change to school start times, so input from all of these groups needs to be a part of any discussion and eventual plan” Maleyko predicts a plan of action will not be fully developed in time for the 2020-2021 school year. The Novi board of education unanimously approved a later start time for Novi High School students for the 2020-21 school year. Next year, students will be able to enjoy a bit more sleep with a new start time of 8 a.m. One of the main logistical issues with a later start time for the Dearborn Public Schools district that Maleyko mentions is the district’s three-tier bus system. Others include after-school activities and family obligations. “In order for our students to continue to excel, we as a community must be willing to explore sound educational practices that support student achievement at all levels," Maleyko said. "Adjusting school start times needs to be part of that exploration." Contact Miriam Marini: mmarini@gannett.com
