We Need to Talk About Alan Peter Cayetano's Creepy Painting

Not all distractions are created equal. The TV reporter in a Spongebob shirt during a shooting in Greenhills? Tasteless, sure, and a little comical. A giant painting that shows yourself being worshipped, however, is a whole 'nother level.

It all started when Rappler journalist Mara Cepeda tweeted photos while covering Alan Peter Cayetano and other House leaders holding a press conference in the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines at the Batasang Pambansa.

Then, one user pointed out the painting behind Alan Peter Cayetano. The painting shows the Speaker being prayed over by a room full of lawmakers at the Session Hall. It's creepy to say, the least. What does it all mean? Something? Nothing?

And, of course, people riffed off of the tweets in various ways.

To put some context, the painting has been revealed to be based on the time when lawmakers prayed over Cayetano after he won the speakership election in 2019. Yeah... I guess that warranted a commissioned painting for the Speaker. But, personally, we would've gone more Renaissance with the direction for less creepiness—not that we would commission such a thing.
