Mactan Cebu International Airport T2 Bags Win at World Architecture Festival

Coming from its win at the 2019 International Architecture Awards (IAA) in July, the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Terminal 2 has one more accolade under its belt. The terminal has won against the likes of Singapore’s Jewel Changi Terminal and the Istanbul Airport under the Completed Building Transport category at the World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam.

The terminal was conceptualized by design firm Integrated Design Associates (IDA) Hong Kong. Its architect Winston Shu worked with local furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue and interior design firm Budji Royal in completing the world-class interiors we see today.

According to the judges from the competition, it was the terminal’s simplicity and loyalty to local resources that stood out. On the offical announcement page, it reads : “This is a simple and elegant new airport that uses many locally sourced materials. It is integrated into the development of a local hub and a landscape plan. The internal spaces are light and uncluttered and the design is capable of future extension. It is clearly popular with the local community and this established memorable travel experiences.”

The Mactan Cebu International Airport's second terminal opened on July 1, 2018 and has a floor area of 65,000 square meters. The airport's vision is to become one of the top 10 passenger-centric airports in Asia .
