Defending champion San Beda University extended its unbeaten winning streak to eight with another dominant performance following an 88-57 demolition of St. Benilde Friday in NCAA Season 95 at The Arena in San Juan.

Calvin Oftana, a fourth year forward, delivered another brilliant all-around game with a career best 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-of-3 from three-point territory with nine rebounds off the bench in less than 21 minutes.

AC Soberano also had a solid game as a second stringer with 14 markers, while James Kwekuteye-Canlas contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The victory not only improved the Lions’ record but also stretched the team’s winning run to 22 games dating back to last season. The last time the SBU lost was on Aug. 21 in the first round against Lyceum.

“As what I’ve always said, we take it on a game to game basis. I think we still have 10 more games to go, and our goal is make it to the top two and have a twice to beat in the playoffs,” said Fernandez.

San Beda took control of the game early, 20-9.

By halftime, the lead has ballooned to 19 points, 44-25, as Calvin Oftana scored 11 points, while Evan Nelle and AC Soberano each scored eight points for the Mendiola-based school.

CSB coach TY Tang was ejected from the game late in the second quarter after being assessed back-to-back technicals, first for continues complaining and later when he made physical contact with the referee.

Meantime, host school Arellano University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos scored contrasting wins as the Chiefs stunned the Pirates while the Stags downed the University of Perpetual Help DALTA System Altas.

Justin Arana finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Kent Salado contributed 16 points, six boards and four assists as the Chiefs improved to 2-6 with a game left in the first round.

Lyceum now sports a 6-3 but has dropped its last two games.

Allyn Bulanadi, on the other hand, fired a personal-best 31 points as the Stags defeated the Altas, 107-90, in head coach Egay Macaraya’s return from a one-game suspension.

SSC-R improved to 4-3 while UPHDS dropped to 3-6 despite the presence of coach Frankie Lim – back after his ‘on leave’ status in the last game of the Altas versus the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals.
