by Waylon Galvez

Calvin Abueva of the Phoenix Fuel Masters sprained his right ankle during a tune-up game against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings Thursday at The Upper Deck in Pasig City although “The Beast” says it is not serious.

Abueva said that he accidentally stepped on the foot of Jervy Cruz near the end of the game although he assures that it is nothing serious.

“Thank God It’s not serious, it’s not severe,” Abueva said as he arrived limping at the first-ever PBA Media Day at Solaire in Pasay City.

This will be the first all-Filipino conference of Abueva in a Phoenix Fuel uniform after the franchise obtained him in a trade with Alaska prior to the PBA Governors’ Cup last season.

According to Phoenix Fuel coach Louie Alas, Abueva will rest for a few days. However, he expects the energetic forward to see action in their season debut against Meralco on January 18 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

“He’s ok, there’s nothing to worry with Calvin,” said Alas.

Abueva has career averages of 13 points and nine rebounds per game, and he is expected to provide the same numbers in his first Philippine Cup campaign with Phoenix Fuel.
