Michigan's Jim Harbaugh: I take responsibility for Wisconsin loss

Jim Harbaugh was both introspective and self-critical in reviewing Michigan's 35-14 blowout loss at Wisconsin . He knows "the college football world" saw what happened in Madison, Wisconsin, and he feels it was "pretty obvious to everybody that watched" that U-M "wasn't good enough." In many ways, Harbaugh echoed his comments from Saturday , when he said the Wolverines were outplayed, out-coached and out-prepared. On Monday, Harbaugh spoke about the team's performance. "Not acceptable," he said, noting his team's lack of preparation. "As I said, A to Z, you could point to wasn’t good enough. Determined to get it fixed is where we’re at right now. I could go into all the details, but every single detail is saved for our team. We’ll talk about it. Already have as a coaching staff, what our plans are and what ways that we’re determined to see the improvement. Confident that we’ll rally and get that done.” Saturday wasn't a day Michigan was proud of, and now the Wolverines will get back to work — to "make darn sure it doesn't happen again." “The only way I know is to go back to work and dedicate yourself to improvement and fixing," Harbaugh said. "That was a bad day. That was not a banner day for Michigan. You don’t want that to turn into two losses. Won’t let one loss turn into two." Harbaugh accepted responsibility for Michigan's poor play, pointing to numerous areas where the Wolverines weren't up to par. What seemed to stick with him the most was the team's level of physicality and effort. Wisconsin piled up 359 yards rushing, and U-M's run game managed just 40. "We weren’t as physical as our opponent on the offensive line or the defensive line,” said Harbaugh, also noting missed tackles and missed fits in the run game. All game long, the Badgers played with more energy. Moreover, the Wolverines struggled to respond to adversity, as communicated by tight end Nick Eubanks, who said a costly first-quarter fumble near the goal line "killed us." “We didn’t play physical enough," Harbaugh said. "We were outhustled. I take responsibility for that. In many ways that we were outschemed, also take responsibility for that. That’s my job to make sure that we’re completely sound in all offenses, defenses, everything that we’re running. How I manage the team and get them to play hard. Play tough." Harbaugh also placed responsibility on his players and staff. He said the Wolverines "have to focus" and "play with focus." He believes that level of focus "has to be coached, too." Harbaugh already has communicated with the coaching staff about how the team can improve. And he remains confident in his team's ability to get better. “I believe in our coaches, I believe in our players, and the ways that we haven’t been successful in this past game, it was thorough," Harbaugh said. "It was a lot. I know our coaches are determined. They aren’t accepting it.” Contact Orion Sang at osang@freepress.com . Follow him on Twitter @orion_sang .
