Michigan basketball search: Ed Cooley staying at Providence

On Monday, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel spoke with Providence head coach Ed Cooley about the Wolverines' vacant men's basketball job. On Tuesday, Cooley made it official that he's staying at Providence, with the school announcing the coach has agreed to a contract extension . Per multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, Cooley was never formally offered the Michigan job by Manuel — who is still expected to meet with Miami Heat assistant coach Juwan Howard on Tuesday . Manuel has also met with Michigan assistant coaches Saddi Washington and Luke Yaklich about the job. It's unclear at this time if further interviews will be added. Cooley, who will turn 50 in September, began his run at Providence in 2011 — a year before Manuel became Connecticut’s athletic director. Eventually, Manuel became familiar with Cooley’s work as the two programs competed against each other in the Big East. Another card in Cooley’s camp was Turnkey Search managing director Gene DeFilippo, who has worked with U-M on coaching searches before. He was the athletic director at Boston College during Cooley’s nine-year stint as an assistant coach with the program. A Providence native who played at Stonehill College in Massachussetts, Cooley’s first Division I assistant job was at Rhode Island in 1996 before he joined Al Skinner at BC in 1997. Cooley helped the Eagles reach five NCAA tournaments, including a Sweet 16, before taking over a Fairfield program that was coming off a nine-win season in 2006. He went 92-69 in five seasons there, going 25-8 in his final year before leaving for Providence. Cooley got Providence back to the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade during his third year in 2014. That run was the first of five straight bids, though none of them went beyond the round of 32. His 162 wins are third on the school’s all-time list and his five NCAA tournament bids are tied with Dave Gavitt for the most in school history. Contact Nick Baumgardner at nbaumgardn@freepress.com .
