Michigan basketball knocks off Maryland. Here's what we saw

Michigan entered Saturday needing a win after an upset loss at Penn State on Tuesday . It found one, thanks to a stingy defense that forced plenty of turnovers and bad shots, and an offense that scored enough down the stretch. The sixth-ranked Wolverines took an early lead and never trailed in a 65-52 win over No. 24 Maryland. Michigan (23-3, 12-3 Big Ten) opened up the game with a 14-2 run and held Maryland (19-7, 10-5) to 18 points in the first half. The Wolverines eventually went cold from the field, which allowed the Terrapins to get back into the game. But Michigan scored late to walk away with a win. Charles Matthews scored 14 points with six rebounds, Zavier Simpson had 12 points and eight assists, and Ignas Brazdeikis had 13 points and five rebounds. Aaron Wiggins led Maryland with 15 points. Michigan didn't waste time in rebounding from Tuesday's ugly loss. The Wolverines led from the tip and took a 27-18 lead into halftime — largely on the strength of the defense. Michigan contested every shot, had hands in passing lanes and guarded the Terrapins closely. Maryland turned it over 13 times in 34 possessions and shot 7-of-24 from the field. The two leading scorers, point guard Anthony Cowan and center Bruno Fernando, combined for two points on 1-of-7 shooting. That stingy defense — along with key transition buckets — helped the Wolverines avoid the sloppy start that ultimately cost them at Penn State. It could've been more, though. The Wolverines' defensive performance could've effectively put the game away at halftime if the offense had kept up. But it didn't, struggled to make open shots like it has all season. After scoring 21 points to take a 15-point lead at the 9:35 mark, Michigan's offense fizzled out. The Wolverines scored just six points the rest of the half, missing an opportunity to take a decisive lead, and shot just 3-of-15 on 3s in the first half. Part of the reason might've been Simpson's absence. The point guard picked up his second foul with 6:25 left and sat the rest of the half. Maryland, meanwhile, finally hit a pair of outside shots to cut the lead to single digits. Cowan hit back-to-back 3s to cut it to seven, then Brazdeikis hits a 3 after Matthews with an offensive rebound. Fernando getting going, alley-oop and then a drive, six points in first five minutes. As expected, Maryland didn't stay in an offensive funk for the entire game. The Terrapins were hot to open the second half. Cowan and Fernando combined for the team's first 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting, and Maryland cut the lead down to three with 10:21 remaining. A minute later, Cowan had a chance to tie the game — but missed his 3. And then Michigan sprung into action. Poole scored in transition off the missed shot, and Simpson hit a 3 on the ensuing possession to stretch the lead to eight. Every time Maryland threatened, the Wolverines had a response. Wiggins hit a 3 out of a timeout. Brazdeikis responded a couple possessions later. Then Jon Teske scored nine consecutive points. He had two dunks off assists from Matthews and Simpson, and then hit a 3 after missing his first six to the crowd's relief. That gave Michigan an 11-point lead with 2:47 left, effectively icing the game. Contact Orion Sang at osang@freepress.com . Follow him on Twitter @orion_sang .
