PM wants greater female representation

Prime Minister Scott Morrison believes it is crucial to see more women in parliament based on merit.

He urged the party faithful at a NSW state Liberal conference in Sydney on Saturday to build for the next state and federal elections, with the latter poll coming first.

"That means ensuring we have the best candidates ready to go," he said.

"I want to see more women in our parliament and I want to see the NSW division work with me and my team to deliver that on merit, on merit, that's the key."

He said it isn't for him to tell members of the NSW division how it should select candidates.

"But we need to lift that representation and that's your job .. I'm trusting you to deliver on those things."

Mr Morrison unexpectedly won the May 18 federal election and is not expected to face the electorate again for three years.

His win came just weeks after Gladys Berejiklian was returned to power in the NSW election, a state that has a fixed four-year term of government.
