Mandurah man tries to sell gopher ‘with 72km/h speed limit’

At first glance it appears to be an elderly rev-head’s dream - a mobility scooter, boasting a top speed of a cool 72km/h.

But the “good strong motor” inside this mean machine could land the buyer on the wrong side of the law.

A Mandurah man advertised the five-speed gopher in buy and sell groups in the hope of finding someone willing to spend $500 on the souped up piece of kit.

He told prospective buyers the red scooter had a 250cc, five-speed manual clutch and showed of pictures of it on a workshop bench and dragging behind a trailer holding a wheelie bin.

“Good strong motor,” he wrote.

“Have had it up to 72km (on phone gps) does go faster but is a handful at that speed to keep it in a straight line.”

The advert has been met with jokes and jibes from countless social media users, including popular online identity The Bell Tower Times.

“Grandpa got an upgrade, now it’s all over for you bitches,” they wrote on Twitter.

But while the scooter might look like fun, testing its speed capabilities on a WA footpath or road could break the law.

Under WA legislation, motorised scooters are to be ridden at a maximum speed of just 10km/h on the footpath (or at the side of the road if there isn’t a footpath) to be classed as pedestrians.

The Road Safety Commission’s website states motorised scooters which go faster must be registered as vehicles.

But there are no laws stopping anyone without a mobility issue from using the scooters.

The advertisement does not say whether the gopher is licenced. The seller has been contacted for comment.
