A man is in hospital with severe burns after a boat exploded on Sydney Harbour.

Emergency services were called to a small vessel that had caught fire near Birkenhead Point on Monday morning, creating a large plume of black smoke.

A 34-year-old man sustained burns to about 30 per cent of his body from the blast, according to CareFlight's team.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
