Drug-stuffed apple thrown into NSW prison

A man is behind bars after allegedly throwing an apple filled with drugs and a syringe over a NSW prison wall.

Two Corrective Services officers were surveilling the perimeter of the Berrima jail in the Southern Highlands on Sunday afternoon when they allegedly saw him throw the fruit.

One of the officers who tried to stop the man from driving away was struck by the car's side mirror and fractured his wrist, requiring surgery.

"We hope he makes a full recovery," Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin said in a statement on Wednesday.

The apple, which allegedly concealed a syringe and drugs, was seized.

The 44-year-old man was charged with various offences, including using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and supplying a syringe to an inmate in custody.

He was refused bail to appear at Hornsby Local Court on June 12.
