NTPC increases capacity of 2 thermal power stations - The Economic Times

It is commendable that very efficient supercritical generating units are getting added to the system. However, to fully derive the economical and low-emission benefits, these units should operate at higher plant load factor. Given that the average national level PLF of coal based power plants is about 64%, under utilisation of these newly commissioned assets is bound to happen and it negates economic and environmental benefits we are looking for. One way to counter this is to have a policy framework for scraping old and inefficient thermal units. This will increase the aggregate efficiency and PLF at national level, reduce emissions and create huge replacement market for thermal power plant manufacturing sector, which is currently facing slump.
