“On the occasion of the commemoration of the 25 January revolution and the Police Day, the General Command of the Egyptian Armed Forces has taken the necessary actions, in coordination with the interior ministry, to secure the celebrations across Egypt’s provinces.” the army’s spokesperson, Tamer Al-Rifai, said in a statement.

Field armies and military forces, Al-Rifai added, will be deployed to secure “vital sites and major roads and thoroughfares.”

He explained that joint patrols of the military troops and the police forces would be deployed to deal with what he described as, “any attempt to break the law.”

The army official stressed that “vigilant measures” were taken to secure the country’s Suez Canal and borders to prevent infiltration and smuggling attempts.

As for the Tahrir Square, where the revolution took place, Al-Rifai pointed out that it would witness “tightened security presence.”

Next Friday marks the eighth anniversary of the eruption of the Egyptians’ popular rallies, calling for the overthrow of Mubarak, who officially stepped down on 11 February 2011.

There have been no calls for mass demonstrations on the upcoming revolution anniversary.
